The town is located on the bank of the Ghaggar about 23 kms. north of Fatehabad in 29041'- north latitude and 75034' east longitude. The population of the town was 7,740 in 1971 as against 5,348 in- 1961. Ratia is popularly known as "Rattia" and "Ratiya" as-well.

As of 2001 India census, Ratia had a population of 23,821. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Ratia has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 55%. In Ratia, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Ratia is home to the Sikhs who have settled here for decades. Many Sikhs from Ratia are good fighters and have been involved in the army for decades.Ratia is know for its fertile land and also for its production.
