Purulia Pump Storage Project

The Purulia Pump Storage Project (PPSP), is one of the largest Pump Storage Plants in India located at Ajodhya hills under Bagmundi police station in the Purulia District of West Bengal maintained by WBSEDCL formerly known as WBSEB under the ownership of the Government of West Bengal. The plant with an installed capacity of 900 MW (4 X 225 MW) had been set up in order to mitigate the shortage of power at peak hours or to meet the peak demand within the state of West Bengal and also to improve the plant factor of the existing thermal power plants.
The feasibility study of the project started from August 1988 which was completed on December 1992. The design and construction the plant had been completed between the span October 1995 to February 2008.
At present the plant is fully operational with the generated 900 MW of electrical power being thrown to the national grid at 400 KV through two 400 KV circuits, and the same collected from two 400 KV substations located at Arambag and Durgapur at the peak hours.
