More about NIT Durgapur Alumni Association

NIT Durgapur Alumni Association (NITDAA) was formed in 2002 at the behest of the Board of Governors, RECD. Its key stakeholders are alumni, the Institute and Society at large, whose generosity has enabled alumni to receive a world class education.

As a social cum professional organization, NITDAA strives to be a platform for alumni all over the world to keep in touch with each other as well as the Institute. Its chapters today span the world, with Singapore being the latest addition after UAE, UK and the USA.

The Institute has completed its 50 years of glorious journey in 2010. NITDAA has celebrated Year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations at various corners of the globe by various chapters.

The 9th Annual Global Meet of NITDAA was held in the Institute campus on January 9th, 2011. Dr Bikash Chandra Sinha, Chairman, BOG presided over the event. A large number of alumni attended the Global meet from all over the world. This year the passing out batch of 1986 celebrated their Silver Jubilee year with great fanfare. More than 100 students from 1986 batch with their families from around the world converged in the college campus.

Within the country, the alumni association has chapters in most large cities, where people keep in touch both formally as well as informally. This year’s initiatives include Chennai, Hyderabad, Haldia and Bellary.

Activities of the chapters include regular get-togethers and outings, seminars to keep members abreast of various technological advances, as well as initiatives to give back to society, for example, by paying for eduation of economically challenged school children. New initiatives including supporting economically challenged people to live a life of dignity by helping them set up small businesses and volunteering time at Old Age Homes, where residents miss social company.

The alumni association continues to keep in close touch with the Institute and watches events in the Institute with keen interest. It has instituted Prof S.N. Ray Scholarship for eight students per year. NITDAA has contributed to programmes like Arohan, RECSTACY and ‘Maths’ N Tech Club’ and actively participated in all these programmes. It has also leveraged its membership to influence more organizations to come to the campus for placement.

A notable event in the past 12 months was the rallying of alumni all over the world to chip in to support an alumnus, Chiranjib Bhattacharjee as he got a new lease of life after dual transplant of his kidneys and liver. The cost of his surgery was largely met by donations from alumni (26 lakhs).

In March, 2011, the new committee of NITDAA Apex body took charge under the leadership of Mr. Ashish Kole, 1983 pass-out. The Apex Committee has started a quarterly meet with the chapter presidents and secretaries to chalk out the strategies and action plan to augment the activities of NITDAA in a very professional manner. The first meeting was held in Kolkata in May followed by a second meeting in Delhi in July 2011.

This year also saw the launching of the new alumni web site (www.nitdaa.org), through which alumni and current students have kept in touch with each other. Current students have used this platform to connect regarding employment and internship apportunities. Others have used the platform to locate long lost batchmates. Some have used the site to seek sponsorship for their projects. We intend to make our web site an interactive glue to connect all of us together.

The thrust for this quarter is the creation of a directory of Entrpreneurs / Self employed alumni. The objective of this exercise is (a) to compile a list as above and (b) to circulate the same amongst other alumni so the two may connect and conduct business.

In order to provide the current students of the Institute with real-life skills, NITDAA has instituted a lecture series “Beyond the Walls”. The first lecture in the series this year was by Thomas Mookken, who conducted a workshop on facing interviews, how to write CV, Personality Development, etc. from 2nd September till 4th September,2011.
