More about Muslim Women's Welfare Organisation

Muslim Women’s Welfare Organization is a registered body set up in 1989 with the aim of providing vocational training to women of the weaker section of society – women of all communities in general and Muslim women in particular. Besides its various educational and counseling activities, the organization runs a Vocational Training Center in Jamia Nagar, Okhla, from which over 5000 girls have benefitted so far. The Muslim Women’s Welfare Organization has no fixed income and runs purely on donations.

Background Information

A survey was conducted on the condition of women of the weaker section of society and the following was the result:

1. Women were found to be largely uneducated and untrained.
2. Widows and divorcees had no financial support.
3. Women were largely exploited in the name of tradition and social custom.

Taking these points in view, an urgent need was felt to educate and train these women so they may become more aware of their rights, as well as be more self-sufficient and better able to support their families. To fulfill this need, a group of women social workers founded the Muslim Women’s Welfare Organization. These seven founding members form the Executive Committee, while several other women volunteers form the general body.
