Maurawan

Maurawan is a town and a nagar panchayat in the Unnao district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.There is a white marble plaque on the wall (Big Gate) of K.N.P.N. Inter college in the village which commemorates the contribution of 12 men from the village, who went to the Great War 1914-1919 and fought on the side of the British imperial forces. It was ruled for a majority of time by Raja Shanker Sahai of Unnao. His eldest son, Kunwar Guru Narain Seth, a Congressman, was the unopposed MLC from this region for 22 years. It has the ancestral palace still in place. Raja Shanker Sahai and Rani Shanker Sahai Inter College operate in this area.GeographyMaurawan is located at. It has an average elevation of. The nearest airport is Lucknow.The great temple of the Goddess Durga, known as "Bankhandi devi", is one of the most venerated places in the area around Maurawan. Not only those from Maurawan but also residents of other districts come to visit this sacred location. According to some, British officers tried to demolish the temple along with the "pindi", but as soon as they hit the pindi a loud tiger's roar frightened them into fleeing. The greatest number of visitors come to the temple during Navratri, and locals have worshipped the "pindi" daily since the time of that legend.Maurawan is also famous for its poets and authors.The writer of famous fictional show Chandrakanta -DevvkiNandan Khatri lived here for some time and the recipient of the president award Dr.Arun Prakash Awasthi was born here.
