The ancient name of Katigorah was Kapilnagar which is renamed as Katigorah thereafter. The famous ancient Hindu Monks (Hrishi) Kapil Muni gained siddi (acquisition of highest knowledge to know the supreme personality) in this circle on the bank of river Barak at present this site is existing as a Hindu Temple in the name of Siddheswar Kapil Muni Ashram on the either bank of river Barak (at present under Hailakandi District which is due to change of coarse of river Barak). In this connection the name of 02 revenue villages under this circle just opposite bank of this temple are still existing in the name of Siddipur and Siddheswar.

Historically, the then Kachari King once upon a time protected the entire portion of Cachar District fall under this circle area as his territory by erecting / providing wooden guard wall from the provable attack of “MAN SENA” (Monipur King) which is called in local language “KAT” (Wood) and “GOR” (Protection) which is substituted in single words “KATGOR” and thereafter it is derived as “KATIGORAH”. One historical fort related to this affairs is still existing on the either bank of river Barak just opposite to this circle office (at present under Karimganj District near Badarpur Circle Office) which is opined by the public in general that the Kachari King constructed this fort. On the other hand one Revenue Village under this circle is existing in the name of “GORERVITORE” and meaning of this word “GORERVITORE” means inside the GOR i.e protection and hence the same name is appeared to be directly related to the meaning of the name “KATIGORAH”.

Historically, the last of the Kachari King Raja Gobinda Chandra established his temporary kingdom at Village – Niz-Haritikar Pt-II under this circle on the bank of river Barak (from the year 1813 to 1830) and the said area is still existing in the name of “RAJARTILLA” who was assassinated by a group of seditious persons with the help of some of his personal attendants on April 24, 1830 at the said village. One temple in the name of Rajartilla Kalibari and one Bhairab Bari Temple are still existing at that village – Haritikar Pt-II and Chandinagar Pt-III respectively which were established by the said King. Latest in the year 1876 this circle area was lapsed to the British rule with the Cachar District and this Revenue Circle Office was established during that period by the British Emperor which is still existing. On the other hand the Queen Induprava, W/o. – Raja Gobinda Chandra crossed the river Barak and entered in this circle area while coming to the Village – Haritikar first at Village – Barjatrapur and this place is known as Ranighat and the ferry service and the bridge over the river Barak at that site is also known as Ranir Ferry.
