More about Kalindi Quilts

Mrs Kalindi Sandeep Hambir
G.D. Fine-Art , India | International Quilt Artist
Her Dream : To be able to create art quilts which will be remembered across the globe and touch upon varied subjects and traditions.
Brief Introduction: Kalindi grew up in a traditional Indian family and was exposed to Fine art an early age. Painting and sewing was always close to the heart. She was also impacted by the colour combinations existing in nature … She chose to study Fine art from the renowned “Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune” and specialized in “Portrait painting”.
The deeper understanding of light and shadow helps her in her current passion. Her quilts are painstakingly created by using multiple hues and shades of the fabric quilted to perfection. Kalindi is dedicated and works on her subject for hours together. forgetting everything else around her.
How did it all start ?
Kalindi, after her marriage, had an opportunity to learn dress designing too. Here, she was fascinated by the varied nature of fabrics and their character... the portrait painter in her saw it as an opportunity to use the power of different fabrics as a medium of expression. It became the turning point in her career.
At home, the demand on her time was increasing.. two children needed attention. It was for them that Kalindi made her first quilts. In India, quilts are an expression of love, generally handmade by grandmothers and aunts. Kalindi was attracted to the colorful and warm world of quilts and the quilting became her passion.
Her early quilts were made without the fine tools that the quilting community uses. The perfection and variety was amazing and she was encouraged to dabble into other areas of quilting ... quilted products like cushions, purses, artefacts etc.
Later in 2008, during her stay in China, she got formal training in patchwork and quilting techniques from the Japanese Quilt Association. She has tried almost every technique of quilting such as, traditional patchwork, raw edge applique, reverse applique, applipiecing, thread Painting and various quilting stitches.
India has a rich in quilting culture. Kutch, Gujarat, Rajasthan,Murshidabadi... multiple traditions and styles enthralled her.. finally from quilts used as covers or ”Dohar.” she moves to making Art Quilts, which are hung on wall as Art. Today, Kalindi has won prestigious awards globally.
She regularly participates in exhibitions and competitions at an international level and is an acclaimed quilting artist.
Her formula for success is based on her talent, hard work and attention to details. Also she is particular about the quality of material she uses. Only the world class she uses raw materials goes in to her Art quilts. She has Imported to be able to produce International standards of Quality. She uses raw materials like fabrics of Robert Kaufman, Anthology, Moda, Hand dyed fabrics, thread brand Madeira, Fujix, Mettler, sewing machine BERNINA 440 quilters edition, BERNINA Q20, BERNETT E56.
All this and the touch of home dyed fabrics to get the exact hue certainly give her quilts and edge above others...
She is the only Indian woman Awarded Internationally till July 2016
