Kakinada Municipal Corporation

Traditionally, there was a small village by name “Kakavandivada” situated near the present Kakinada City. But soon after the settlement of Dutch here in their first Establishment, they used to call it as “Co-Canada” which subsequently transformed into “Kakinada” after independence. However, there are several theories in circulation with regard to the origin of the name of Kakinada on the basis of legends history, Logic, Geographical and other factors.

The following are some such theories and beliefs as to the derivation of the name Kakinada

As the City of Kakinada, when Kakasura lost his eye with the arrow of Rama, After obstructing Rama, in Vanavasa
As “Kakinandi vada” derived when an Ikshvaku king by name “Kaka” built this town in his name.
As Kakulavada on aboda of crows, where a number of crows only our the area to catch the fish on this shore.
As “Co-Canada” when the Dutch used to store Co-Conut products here and export them in large scale.
As Co-Canada when the British East India Company Established the 1st Canadian Baptish Mission to Carry on the Missionary activities
