In 1996Ashok Giri of CPI(M) defeated Manturam Pakhira representing Congress. Hrishikesh Maity of CPI(M) won the seat in 1991,1987, 1982 and 1977 defeating Gourishankar Bhattacharjee of Congress in 1991and 1987 and Basudev Sautya of Congress in 1982and 1977.
