The historical name of Kaiperambalur is Kapparambur. During the Kulothunga Cholas (approximately 1070–1218 CE), this village was notable for its grand monthly festivals. During the Kulothunga Chola period, two important temples were built: "Siva Sokkanathar Temple" and ”Lord Varadharaja Perumal Temple”. Today, these temples are considered some of the oldest and most affluent temples in the history of India.

Centuries later, this village was renamed "Thungapuram" by the postal department of India to avoid confusion with another city had been created with the same name.

Many companies within the cement industry have sites that can be found in the vicinity of this village due to the large limestone deposits in the region. In particular, the factories for cement companies Arasu, Birla, Sakthi, Dalmia, Tamil Nadu are situated near Thungapuram.

This area is alao notable for the Kaliyaperumaal Temple situated 25 km from Thungapuram. Gangaikonda Cholapuram is also nearby. Gangaikonda Cholapuram is famous for its temple built by King Rajendra Cholan of Chola Empire. King Rajendra Cholan is the son of Rajaraja Cholan who built Tanjore Temple.
