More about Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation,CSMVS

The Jehangir Nicholson Gallery is situated on the second floor of the East Wing of the Museum. A display gallery is used for changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Mirroring this space across the atrium, is a space devoted to research, which contains visible storage for sculpture and paintings, the office, library, and Jehangir Nicholson’s archive of photography.

The Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation was founded after the death of Jehangir Nicholson. To honour his long-standing wish to open his collection to a large public, the entire collection shall for the next 15 years be housed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya at Mumbai, where it adds a modern and contemporary dimension to the Museum. The Jehangir Nicholson Collection comprises nearly 800 works of modern and contemporary art from India, acquired between 1968 and 2001. The earliest work in the collection dates back to 1930. Between 1976 and 2008, 57 paintings from the collection were on display at the Jehangir Nicholson Museum of Modern Art at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). The Collection is held by a private foundation represented by Cyrus Guzder and Kaiwan Kalyaniwalla, the Executors of the estate of Jehangir Nicholson. The Foundation has an Advisory Board, consisting of Dadiba Pundole, Ranjit Hoskote and Mehlli Gobhai.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) is one of the premier art and history museums in India, situated in the Crescent Site at the southern tip of Mumbai. The Museum building is designed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style and is listed as a Grade I Heritage Building. The Museum houses a world-class collection of over 50,000 artifacts representing various forms of art from India and beyond, Nepal, Tibet, Japan China, and Europe. It has an important archaeological collection and a natural history section.
