More about Govt. PG College Jind

Government Postgraduate College, Jind began its academic odyssey in pursuit of excellence on 16 July, 1960 as Public College, Jind. It came to acquire its present mantle and name exactly one year after its inception, i.e. on 17 July, 1961, when it was taken over by the State Government. Ardently engaged in the pious task of serving the academic interest of the students of this historically rich but educationally and socially backward region of Haryana, this college, with the passage of time, has carved out a niche for itself in the academic world. The status of this college in the academic world can be adjudged from the very fact that NAAC has adjudged Govt. P.G. College, Jind, as one of the four best Government Colleges in Haryana with a B+ grade.

This college is situated in the heart of the city on the main road passing through the town, hardly a furlong away form the General Bus Stand of the city. It has the distinction of being one of the oldest and the biggest colleges in Haryana. Its campus is spread over an area of about twenty-one acres of land. The well-maintained parks and lawns and lush-green trees and plants provide sylvan surroundings to the campus. Besides having fully-developed playgrounds/ fields for cricket, badminton, basketball, volleyball, football, handball, hockey, kabaddi (NS), kho-kho, wrestling, and all the major athletic events, the college possesses an imposing building consisting of an adequate number of classrooms, laboratories, departmental rooms, offices. The college also has a seminar hall, six staff quarters, four big parking lots, and a well-stocked and efficiently-managed library with spacious reading rooms for boys, girls and staff.

This college was started as an Arts and Science College with a limited number of optional subjects. But its academic horizon kept expanding at a steady pace with the passage of time. At present the college is a multi-faculty institution with facilities for teaching fourteen subjects (including non-conventional subjects like Mass Communication, Health and Physical Education, Statistics, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Geography) in the Faculty of Arts, nine subjects (including the job-oriented subjects like Bio-Technology and Computer Science) in the Faculty of Science, and all the subjects in B.Com. (including Computer Applications and Principles of Insurance) and BBA in the Faculty of Commerce. The college has also running three UGC sponsored Add-on Courses in Functional English, Functional Hindi and Functional Sanskrit. The college also offers Postgraduate Degree Courses in Hindi, English, Economics and Commerce, PGDCA and Honours Courses in English and Geography. During the current session 2284 boys and 453 girls have been enrolled in various courses run by this college. The Faculty of the college consists of ninety-six experienced and well-qualified lecturers. Besides, there are forty-four highly-motivated, honest and hard-working members of the non-teaching staff.

The college leads the institutions of higher learning in Haryana in all matters. In the academic field, the pass percentage of the students of this college has always been markedly higher than the University pass percentage in most of the classes/ subjects. A large number of students of this college obtain more than 75% marks in aggregate and/ or individual subjects, and the names of quite a few students have also figured in the University Merit List.

The college has won many laurels in various cultural competitions at the Zonal/ Inter-Zonal, State and National Levels. The supremacy of this college in the cultural field is evident from the very fact that it is the only college in Haryana to have the distinction of winning the Running Trophy in the State Level Haryana Day Function for four times in a row: all the four universities in Haryana and the colleges affiliated to them compete for this Trophy. The achievements of the students of this college in games and sports are also praise-worthy, and many students of this college have done their alma mater proud by representing the University/ Haryana State in various Inter-University/ National Championships.

The performance of the college in other co-curricular activities has been equally impressive. Two or three NCC Cadets of this college have been regularly representing Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh Directorate of NCC in the National Republic Day Parade at Rajpath, New Delhi for the last several years. The College has four units of NSS consisting of about 500 volunteers, including 120 girls.

The college keeps humming with various types of curricular/ co-curricular activities throughout the year. Besides organizing Intra-college, Inter-college and Zonal cultural/ literary/ sports competitions regularly, the college has so far organised six academic seminars/ workshops, two of them being of National level, and a Refresher course in Computer Science.
