GNRC… Since its inception

The Endeavor
The need for an integrated super specialty health care facility in North Eastern India had been acutely felt over the last few decades. Especially so in view of the communication barrier, nature of diseases, time and financial constrains of the rapidly growing population. GNRC has been envisaged to fill this major lacuna, not just for Assam, but also for all adjoining States and neighboring countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar etc.

Established in 1987 in association with AIDC, SBI & IDBI, the organization at present have the equity participation of AIDC, NEDFi, IDBI, RCTC, TATA Tea Ltd, etc. along with more than 300 share holders both in India and abroad. The aim is to bring together the best medical professionals and the latest technology and working environment at an affordable cost.

Incorporated as a private company to unfold the vision of Dr. N.C. Borah, the Chief promoter of the organization, the history of Neuroscience in North East India began with this organization. Together with able support from Prof. K. V. Mathai, the first formally trained Neurosurgeon of India, who is a former head of the Department of Neurosurgery, CMC, Vellore, Dr. Borah undertook the Herculean task of setting up the Institute of Neurological Sciences in the year 1987. It started as the only Super specialty hospital of its time in the Eastern Region of India, which has today being recognized as the referral hospital by all the State Governments of North East, Royal Kingdom of Bhutan and the different Public and Private sector organization in the North East.

GNRC, now more commonly known as, is strategically located covering Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. It has also been catering to the critically ill patients of the neighboring third world countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, which lacks basic medical infrastructure, leave aside super specialty hospitals.

While working in the super special field of Neuroscience, Dr. Borah, a visionary, felt the necessity to cater to the needs of another super specialty area - that of the Heart. GNRC in collaboration with Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, setup the GNRC Heart Institute in 1997. Through this Institute, GNRC has ushered in an era of competent service for cardiac ailments, and the best possible men and machine has been brought within the reach of the Region.
In order to extend these state-of-the-art facilities to a larger number of deserving people, the GNRC set up the Institute of Critical Care in July 2001 where three dedicated Operation theatres for G.I. Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic & Re-constructive Surgery and 24 hours emergency services for all kinds of emergency health problems including accidents and injuries have been created.

Today, GNRC is managing three full-fledged superspecialty hospitals with a team of 71 Doctors, 187 Nurses, and around 823 Employees. There are 135 beds, including 79 ICU beds, for patient care supported by a team of dedicated doctors, nurses, technicians and attendants who are providing round the clock service. The services and tariff rendered by GNRC are at par or even less than hospitals of its kind in the country. Apart from diagnostic and therapeutic function, the company promotes academic programmes like annual lectures and regular research programmes. The latest development in medical sciences is constantly kept abreast by the doctors who are frequently sent outside the State for further training.
