Bilga is a historic village and the biggest village in Punjab. It is related to Sh. Guru Arjun Dev Ji. Bilga had given birth to 78 freedom fighters. The place had been given the title "Second Bardoly" by Sardar Patel. The village was also known for the sacred holy more commonly known as "Holiyan", which featured much awaited performances actively encouraging harmony by the means of spiritual and social messages.
Year 1975 saw the emergence of "Ram Leela" in Patti Bhalai under the supervision of Master Ramesh Lal O.T. The milestone in village history “Dussehra”, an Indian festival & a symbol of triumph of virtuous over evil, was much initiated by respected Sh. Ram Lal Gaba & Sh. Satpal Gaba in 1976. They also made sure the presence of Ram Leela in outer parts of the village with the exotic performances by Sh. Tarlochan Singh Sanghera as Ram and Sh. Jarnail Singh (Jaila) as Lakshman. For four years, these renowned people celebrated the festival with their personal savings and after that the village took ownership under the guidance of the initiators.
After the demise of Sh. Ram Lal Gaba, a Dussehra Committee was formed with Sh. Satpal Gaba as its president. Every year, the village people gather at the Dussehra ground at Khokhewal Road to enjoy the spirit of the festival. The festival has since then been a centerpiece of affection and love from natives as well as people from surrounding villages without and hindrance of any caste or religion.
The committee is thankful for all the love and financial assistance that it has received do far and genuinely believe it will continue in the same manner. Even the NRI’s wait each year for the festival and demand the videos. This is how Bilga has added one more chapter in its rich cultural history and giving people the joy of the festival along with moments of togetherness and brotherhood.
