The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics at Sri Hasanamba Dental College, Hassan ,started functioning in the year 1991 and upgraded itself to a centre for postgraduate training in the year 2008. The department has a teaching program of more than 255 hours for the undergraduate students and also trains them in the basics of diagnosing various dental and orofacial malocclusions and treatment of simple malocclusions using removable appliances. Being a postgraduate teaching department , we dedicate amble time in training our post graduate trainees to diagnose and to formulate comprehensive treatment plan, use fixed ,semi fixed ,dentofacial orthopedics and removable orthodontic appliances to correct the malocclusions and malformations of the dentofacial region. We give training in research methodology and various clinical research projects are being carried out in our department. The proximity and close association with the Hassan Medical College ,AIMS, Adichunjugari and Malanad engeneering college gives a unique opportunity for the young post graduate trainee researchers to extent their research projects to the fields which are dealt by the above mentioned institutes. The young researchers are given opportunities to make use of the facilities at various imaging centres at Bangalore and advanced technical institutes like IISC Bangalore.
As being the only referral centre for the speciality for three adjacant districts it caters the needs for an average 1600 patients every year. The Department boasts of having treated almost over 15700 cases in a period of 8 years. All the latest treatment modalities are being used to treat the patients in the department; invisible orthodontics, clear aligners, distraction osteogenisis, speedy orthodontics, temporary anchorage devices, self ligating brackets etc.
GOAL
The goals of the department include
1) To improve the quality of life of its patients by enhancing the appearance, self-esteem, oral function, and overall health of the patient community.
2) Strive to create a bunch of young orthodontist who are well trained, dedicated and who will work hard for the well being of the patients who approaches them.
3) Play a big part in the advancements in education, service, and research related to the field of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics

TEACHING PROGRAMS

The educational programs the department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Ortopaedic are extensive with courses for undergraduate students, interns and post doctoral students.

Undergraduate Education
Undergraduate program in Orthodontics is designed to enable the qualifying dental surgeon to diagnose, analyse and treat simple orthodontic problems by preventive, interceptive and corrective Orthodontic procedures.
This program provides an in depth knowledge about the growth and development, diagnosis, treatment planning, material science, appliances and management of different types of malocclusion.

Clinical practice is limited to collection and analysis of records and correction of mild occlusal problems using removable appliances.
Didactic and laboratory exercises provide a strong foundation for delivery of limited orthodontic treatment as part of an adult and child patient's comprehensive dental care.

Postgraduate Residency Program
The department had started post graduate program in 2008 with 2 seats intake. In 2014 it was raised to 3 seats intake by approval of the Dental Council of India. The goal of Orthodontics residency program is to provide advanced education in Orthodontics to the graduate dentists who are interested in a career or specialisation practice, teaching and research.

The program requires a minimum of three academics year for completion. A high level of advanced clinical skills and completion of a curriculum broadly representative of the basic and applied science is required. Original research and a dissertation in any of the number of related fields is required for the successful completion of the post graduate program. The Principals of scientific research design and evaluation are emphasised.

The program devotes a considerable portion of time to advanced basic science courses specially organised to serve as a prerequisite to the thorough understanding of the clinical problems in Orthodontics & dentofacial orthopaedics.. In the clinical area the student is exposed to different therapeutic philosophies through independent study, demonstrations and practice.
They are introduced to a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes TMD diagnosis and treatment, surgical-orthodontic treatment, and pre- and post-restorative orthodontic treatments. Postgraduate students gain experience in the treatment of patients with all types of dentofacial deformities. The post doctoral program also provides its students with experience as instructors, teaching both laboratory and clinical orthodontics to undergraduate as well as posrgraduate dental students.

CLINIC INFORMATION

The Department is located on the fourth floor of the college building and boasts of over 4500 sqft facility which encompasses separate sections for under graduates and post graduates. The department is well equipped with modern dental chairs and armamentarium, fully fledged clinical laboratory separately for postgraduates and undergraduates, sterilisation section, computers with internet connectivity, state of art seminar room, photography room, department library, records room, store room, HOD room, professor room , common staff room and a postgraduates room. The department has the latest version of imaging software namely Dolphin imaging system to aid in diagnosis, treatment planning, cephalometric analysis and treatment prediction. The department has a good inflow of patients with an average of around 700 patients every month.



HOD Desk

Our department caters to the needs of patients as early as 6 years onwards. We have patients all over Hassan and 3 surrounding districts i.e. the rural and urban population. Patients are diagnosed and treatment planning is done with the help of latest state of art diagnostic aids. Elaborate & meticulous case planning is done with record management of all treated cases.

DR REJI ABRAHAM. - PROFESSOR&HOD


 Dr Reji Abraham completed his BDS from VS Dental College & Hospital , Bangalore in the year 1998 and MDS in the year 2003 from College Of Dental Sciences, Davengere. He has got 13 years of teaching experience for undergraduate students and 7 years of teaching experience for postgraduate students. He is a recognised post graduate guide and has guided many post doctoral students in the specialty of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics. He is in the postgraduate examination panel of several health universities across India. He has several national and international publications to his credit and is in the review panel for the Journal of Otology & Rhino-logy , British Journal of Medicine & Medical research , International Journal of Medical & Pharmaceutical Case Reports . He has been a speaker at several national and international events, the last one being Guest speaker at International Orthodontics Conference held at Colombo in February 2016. His area of interest is the role of oro facial musculature in the development of various malocclusions ,segmental mechanics, management of TMD and air way obstruction. Is an excellent clinician and has exceptional stills in managing developing dentofacial malformations
 Adding to this, he is an excellent orator and has conducted several motivational and personality development programs. .
