Holy Church of India

The light of the Orthodox Christian faith was brought to India by Holy Apostle Thomas but after 300 years the Church established by St. Thomas fell into Nestorian heresy which further split into Monophycite and Papal heresies. But by the intercession of St. Thomas the Patron of India God brought back the light of Orthodoxy in the land of India which was made holy by the work and martyrdom of St. Thomas. Orthodoxy is growing day by day among both Roman Catholic-Protestant denominations and pagans.

Russian Orthodox Mission in India is serving Christ and His Church the Russian Orthodox Church. Former Anglican Bishop Dr. Rohan (Polycarp) Nehamaiyah under whose leadership this mission came into Orthodox Church is taking care of the Orthodox Christians in Indian community.

This mission was received into Russian Orthodox Church in year 2012 through the kindness of His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion and His Eminence, Archbishop Mark of Yegoryevsk. After being in contact for long time with Russian Orthodox Church Bro. Sergei had taken a view of the Indian faithful in August 2012 . In November 2012 a Priest Fr. Stanislav was sent to Indian faithful from Russia to take Indian faithful into the Orthodox Church through Chrismation. His Eminence Archbishop Mark sends 2 priests from Russia come once a year for the Divine Liturgy. Now all Indian faithful are waiting to have Dr. Rohan Nehamaiyah (Polycarp) as their Priest to celebrate Divine Liturgy regularly and nourish them with the true Body and Blood of our God Jesus Christ. All the Orthodox Indian faithful are waiting to see an Indian Priest who is from among them – Polycarp because foreigner priests can not do any kind of religions work in India without special visa called Missionary Visa. Besides there is problem with foreign priests that they do not understand local language, customs and culture neither present religio-political situation in India endure foreign priests in India.

There are 6 parishes in this mission located in Maharashtra State of India and is the only Eastern Orthodox Church in India beside Greek Orthodox in Calcutta. We are preaching good news of our Lord mostly in Maharashtra state.

Our congregations don't have church buildings so services are conducted in the houses of the Elders or rented properties. Our Elders and church members are living in very poor condition and in constant fear of either religious fundamentalists or Maoist Terrorists (Naxalites). All of our Elders are evangelizing more than 4 counties which are very countryside. Many of the places have no transportation facility. We have no priests, and hence the Holy Sacraments also. Our community struggling to comprehend the Orthodox Liturgy and theology by translating texts and their distribution. However on of the faithful of communities managed to write a book about the Orthodox faith based on the Bible. There is also an orphanage, founded and headed by Mr. John, an Orthodox Indian, who devoted his life to caring for abandoned children.

Your donations will be used for Church construction, purchase of land for Orthodox cemetery, publications of Orthodox literature, support missionary efforts and for needy faithfuls.
