AN APPEAL TO EDUCATIONAL CHARITIES AND OLD STUDENTS

The appeal made by Sri A R K Murthy, President, Governing Body of Sisu Vidya Mandir, Edepalli, Machilipatnam:

Annie Besant Sisu Vidya Mandir, with the inspiration derived from popular saying, “Vidya Dhanam Sarva Dhana Pradhanam” (the treasure of education is the most important and the highest of all the treasures), was established in 1973 with highest ideals by Sriman C.N. Rangaswamy Ayyangar with 8 students. Gradually, with the support of eminent people, it rose to great heights. “There may be any number of stars but they cannot compete with the moonlight”. Similarly, though there are many educational institutions in Machilipatnam, it is not out of the way to say that they cannot stand by the side of Sisu Vidya Mandir, because, the sole purpose of imparting education of Sisu Vidya Mandir is to mould the character of students studying here multifaceted and full pledged. This educational institution inculcates nationalistic views, patriotism, human values and the traditions of Indian and Arsha culture, in addition to imparting good education. It is really laudable and praiseworthy that this educational institution has been doing great service by following such great ideals. By the year 2001, this institution grew to strength of 800 students and 50 teachers. It has produced many intellectuals, masterminds and versatile people. The way in which the institution celebrated the silver jubilee speaks volumes about its great achievements and standards. This is all the glory of the past. In this context we acknowledge the great service rendered by all those who contributed their might in the development of the institution. Thanks to one and all.

Now, on one side, the educational system is inclining towards the western culture and its system, and on the other, the corporate schools are making a big show alluring the parents. This has undesirable impact on institutions like Sisu Vidya Mandir and their existence itself is now at stake. We are running for science and technology which is a welcoming feature but as Dr. Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan says, “If we forget the basic traditions of our culture it is nothing but doing war in air leaving the ground in total”. In brief, this has made the very existence of the traditional educational institutions questionable and dubious. The strength of students has fallen deplorably and such a pitiable stage has come now that the institutions are unable to pay even the monthly salaries to their teachers.

There is a saying “Seelena Shobhate Vidya” (education is enriched by good character). Keeping this in mind, this educational institution has been giving necessary coaching in arts like music, drawing and scientific aspects like quiz. But now it has been totally ignored by the public causing disappointment and disillusionment among students and teachers. There is no second opinion about that. In the present society where the moral values are going down and atrocities and vices are going up in students, such an educational system is very much essential which can build and develop moral behavior among students. This could be possible only for an educational institution like Sisu Vidya Mandir which stands for the traditions of Indian and Arsha culture. As per the subhashitha, “Sarveshameva Dananam Jnana Danam Paramam Smrutham” (the charity of knowledge is the best and the foremost of all charities). Moreover “Tyage Naikenaiva Amruthathva Manasuhu” (only by sacrifice Amruthathva can be achieved). So, in order to bring the old glory to Sisu Vidya Mandir, I appeal to the old students who are settled in good positions in their life, donors and philanthropists to extend their cooperation to their might. As some poet said, “Inthinthai Vatudinthai”, I very much hope that this institution will grow into a big tree with strong and big branches and will yield sweet fruits. This is my fervent appeal to all of you to join your hands with us in this needy hour. A treasure will be established with the contributions and donations received as the capital fund and the interest accrued will be spent for the development of the school. This amount will also make the teachers feel secured of their services and have moral boost.
Whoever is going to take part in this great yagna of vidya dana, the management will be ever grateful and thankful to them. I once again appeal to all of you to extend all the “Subhas” (good wishes) to this Jnana Saraswathi.
